Students expand their academic skills, building upon their foundation formed in grades K-2. They grow in their independence academically and as explorers of the world around them.  Each child receives key instruction in their core subjects, faith formation, enrichment through their Encore classes, and celebrate cherished class customs, events, and activities. Within the classroom, your student may be divided into smaller groups and given additional assistance to meet his/her individual needs and learning style. Our Resource teachers visit each class to reinforce language, reading, and phonics, and instructional assistants assist the classroom teacher. Our dedicated teaching team helps each child build a strong foundation.

GRADES 3 THROUGH 5
A program of continuous practice and expansion of language arts and math skills is accompanied by their application to content areas. The core and encore subjects are studied in greater depth.

Children on this level are provided with additional opportunities to work independently, according to their abilities. Teachers continue to equip your child with the knowledge, appreciation, skills, habits, and virtues necessary for success. The major focus of these grades is growing in maturity and responsibility. As the advanced Math Program begins in 4th grade, teachers work hard to prepare all students in foundational concepts.

GRADE 3

In third grade, students expand academic skills and grow in independence, confidence, and virtue! Service is a cornerstone of our curriculum, highlighted by two major service projects that deeply engage our students and put "Faith in Action." Additionally, our two resource teachers make weekly classroom visits to reinforce essential language, reading, and phonics skills.

Each week, students attend Encore classes such as Art, Library, Music, PE, Spanish, and Technology. 

3rd-Reading

In reading, students work on developing stamina for longer texts, as well as reading with proper fluency, expression, and phrasing. During the third grade year, many foundational tools are put into practice as students apply multiple comprehension skills to understand and interpret reading texts.
The Guided Math curriculum offers students hands-on learning opportunities to explore concepts, such as the beginnings of algebraic reasoning. There is an emphasis in third grade on obtaining mastery of multiplication and division properties and facts.
In Religion, students gain a more in-depth understanding of the Sacraments, the Creed, and milestones in Church history. They study Creation, the story of Adam and Eve, the Immaculate Conception, and the Assumption of Mary. Third grade students also learn new ways to deepen their prayer life, such as by learning the Morning Offering Prayer.
In Science, third grade students begin to collect data through multiple levels of investigation when conducting experiments. They learn to change variables and explore a variety of outcomes when visiting the Elementary Science Lab. Some of the topics they are introduced to through the Lablearner curriculum include matter, electricity, magnetism, nutrition, and the solar system.
In Social Studies, students learn about United States geography and the branches and functions of the U.S. government. Students look forward to researching and completing projects about a state of their choice. To further enhance the Social Studies curriculum, students showcase their knowledge by performing in an exciting play about our “Fifty Nifty United States.”
Service learning is a hallmark of the third-grade experience at Saint Leo. Students participate in two major service projects, fostering a sense of community and responsibility. These projects help students understand the importance of giving back and making a difference.
Overall, third grade at Saint Leo is a transformative year filled with academic growth, character development, and meaningful service, all supported by a dedicated and nurturing faculty.
